Mini Common Frog Ornament (Lucky Frog)

£60.00£120.00

The Rana Temporaria, or Common Frog as it’s known in the UK, has always been a great love of mine, inspiring much of my artwork since I was a child.

This little frog was modelled to commemorate the Japanese belief that keeping a frog in your wallet will bring good fortune, ensuring that any money leaving it will find it’s way home again. I can’t promise that it works, but he is certainly a cute little fellow to have around.

He comes with his own leather pouch – but, if you feel he needs something more homely, how about adding a miniature set of lilypads?

Inspiration for my Mini Common Frog Ornament or “Lucky” Frog

I met a lady, in Belgium, who asked me to make a mini common frog ornament for her daughter. She had been given a small frog long ago, during a visit to Japan. The person who gave it to her explained about the Japanese Lucky Frog: “Frog” and “Return” being the same word in Japanese, travellers are often given a Lucky Frog to safeguard their return home. A variation to this is putting a little frog in your wallet and, as superstition would have it, the little frog ensures that any money leaving the wallet will eventually find its way back again. She has carried that little frog, now barely recognisable, in her wallet now for more than 30 years – and my miniature model of the common frog means that her daughter is now able to carry on that tradition.

Of course, being a proponent of wearable art, creating this “Lucky Frog” was just the beginning. Now, you can not only have a lucky frog in your wallet, you can also have them on your ears and on your fingers… And then I couldn’t resist adding lilypads to the mix. So now, if your Lucky Frog needs a change of scenery from your wallet, he can have his own lilypads to sit on.
