INSPIRATION for my Mini Scorpion Ornament
Whenever I get inspired to create another piece it’s often because the animal I am drawn to is really rather marvellous. Perhaps it’s their dramatic personality, or that they are structurally interesting – often both. Well scorpions have these features in spades. They also glow in the dark, can live for up to a year without food and they are virtually indestructible. So a scorpion pendant has always been on my To Do List.
And how wonderful to find that we have our own wild colony of yellow-tailed scorpions, nicknamed the Sheerness Scorpion, (on which this piece is based) here in Kent! My first scorpion was a large model – after all, I wanted it to have real impact and be a statement. It is one of the pieces that customers love to hate – or do they hate the fact that they love it?!
However, rather than helping me to avoid modelling such a detailed creature at a tiny scale – it simply fuelled the fires. I’ve had so many requests for tiny scorpions to accompany the original that I eventually agreed to try. Rather than ending up in my Box of Shame, this mini scorpion has become one of the stars of my Mini Beast collection. This Mini Scorpion Ornament is also available as a pendant, earrings, lapel pins, or whatever style takes your fancy,
