Inspiration for my Simple Bladderwrack Cuff
OK – so I’m not known for starting small and simple. My large Bladderwrack Cuff was genuinely the first cuff I have ever made. And it was not until I took the finished piece to a major show, that I started looking at the shape and size of people’s wrists. And I then realised how complicated it can be. Should I have started small? Well the admirers of my bladderwrack cuff at recent shows would disagree. It acted like a magnet to passers by – keen to pick it up, turn it over in their hands, try it on…
Why a bladderwrack cuff? It’s nature’s bubblewrap! Like bubblewrap, it is entices you to try to pop the bladders… although the slimy texture is not quite so endearing. I’ve always been fascinated with it. And now that I live close to the sea, that fascination has only grown. In terms of a plant that was made to be modelled in silver, I can’t think of a better candidate.
And it’s not just a pretty face, as it were. It has been used for centuries as a treatment for anything from obesity to aging skin. The bladders themselves allow the plant to float upright underwater, which helps them to exchange gases and absorb nutrients.
The simple Bladdderwrack Cuff is a newer addition to my sea-themed collection, giving wearers a more everyday option for adorning their wrists.
