Inspiration for my Blue-Ringed Octopus Necklace
This Octopus Necklace was modelled on the toxically beautiful Blue-Ringed Octopus, whose venom can supposedly kill 26 adults in just a few minutes. They are only the size of golf balls and are found in coral reefs and tide pools from Australia to Japan. Definitely a case of small but deadly!
This model of the Blue-Ringed Octopus actually originated as – would you believe it?! – an engagement ring. It’s one of my favourite stories that I tell at my jewellery shows. Basically it was secretly commissioned by a gentleman wishing to present his octopus-loving girlfriend with a truly unique ring. He had the proposal meticulously planned – but unfortunately covid and other life issues got in the way. So 3 years later, and many shows quickly removing evidence of octopuses from my stand before they visited, he finally got to get down on one knee. Thankfully she said a very enthusiastic yes. The thing that amuses me most with this story is that his surname includes a suggestion of murder in it. Very appropriate given the toxicity of this beautiful octopus.
