Inspiration for my Stag Beetle
Ever since I can remember, my father has had a model of a Stag Beetle (mounted as a paperweight) sitting on his dressing table. It is a work of art – but he always wondered why someone would put such effort into a piece and not make it in silver (it is made of sheet metal and silver-plated). So, the moment my father saw my very first creation (my Red-Eyed Tree Frog), he asked me to make him a silver stag beetle ornament. I hesitated – for quite a long time – wanting to wait until my modelling skills were able to do it real justice. I finally ran out of excuses and Stanley is the result. He now enjoys a fair amount of attention and is one of the most recognised pieces in my collection.
What my customer’s say:
Having been brought up on “Life on Earth”, etc., I have always slightly hero-worshipped David Attenborough. I wanted to say thank you to him for inspiring me and countless others over many, many years. So, when Stanley was finished, I sent him a stag beetle ornament. I then received the most delightful handwritten thank you letter. In it, he described my stag beetle as “most handsome”, stating that he was “delighted to have him on my desk – permanently”. Read the whole letter here. The letter is now framed and on my wall at home.
