Inspiration for my Orb Weaver Spider Ring
About 7 years before this spider ring finally emerged, a loyal customer Helen started asking me if I would consider doing a spider ring. Of course I would – but it would have to be right. Structurally robust – while looking like it was literally just crawling across your hand. Statement ring proportions while losing none of the delicacy of the spider itself. OK ok – so it took me a bit longer than I thought and has gone through many many iterations before getting to this. But I am VERY proud of the outcome.
I’m pretty good with most animals but spiders have always scared me. This is despite being brought up in a house with VERY BIG spiders. However, I remember a nature programme where an international spider expert was asked how he had become interested in spiders. He admitted that, in his desire to quell his own arachaphobia, he learnt as much as possible about these amazing creatures – and became completely hooked. Maybe there is hope for me yet (- though I should add that my spider and fly earrings are, in fact, my favourite earrings).
The spider ring is fully modelled and is cast separately from the shank, so as to retain the “crawling” impact of the piece. The shank itself is modelled like an old bit of twig and supports each of the feet.
